For all programmes taught in English—including all MBA programmes—evidence of English language ability is required. If you do not hold a valid qualification that meets LondonBES requirements, your level will be assessed by an internal examination at LondonBES.
Based on this assessment, one of the following will apply:
• You will be exempt from the English Language Support Programme and begin your postgraduate study directly.
• You will study English support courses alongside your graduate programme modules.
• You will first complete intensive English courses (without graduate modules) and then start your programme.
The table below lists the English language tests recognised by LondonBES and the minimum scores required for exemption from English courses. Some departments (e.g., English Language Teaching) may apply higher thresholds. Please check with the relevant academic department for any additional rules.
| Recognised English Language Tests | English-Medium Programmes (Minimum Score) |
MBA Programmes (Minimum Score) |
Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 79 | 72 | 2 years |
| IELTS (Academic) | 6.5 | 6.5 | 2 years |
| LondonBES FLEPS – English Language Stage II | 75 | 70 | 2 years |
LondonBES Proficiency Test scores and completed English language courses are valid for two years and can be transferred to other LondonBES graduate degree programmes within this period.
Applicants who are citizens of countries where the official language is English are exempt from English language courses, provided their undergraduate or postgraduate degree was awarded by an English-medium higher education institution.
Applicants who are not citizens of such countries but completed an undergraduate degree at an English-medium institution in a country where the official language is English are exempt from the language test.
Applicants who are not citizens of such countries but completed a postgraduate degree at an English-medium institution in a country where the official language is English are exempt if they apply within two years of graduation.
For programmes where the language of instruction is not English, requirements are set by the Institute Board.
